The McDonald’s All-American Game means that the nation’s elite high school players get one more opportunity to take the floor against the best competition in their class before heading to college and the national spotlight.Since many of these student-athletes have competed in prominent international competitions or in other major showcase events, there is already a good feel for what they might be capable of at the next level and beyond.
There’s a theme that hangs over the practices at the McDonald’s All-American Game every year.Back in 2013, it was the battle for No. 1 between Andrew Wiggins and Jabari Parker. The next year was all about the big men, with Karl-Anthony Towns, Myles Turner, and Jahlil Okafor giving us a peek at the next generation of centers. It was easy to tell Ben Simmons was the biggest star in 2015. Last year was about establishing a pecking order in one of the deepest classes in recent memory. The theme for this year’s classic is less obvious at first, but undeniable once you see these players up close. The class of 2017 is defined by size, athleticism, and the place in the middle where both meet.
In all, 24 players from 13 states were selected from the game. Kentucky has three commits on the roster, while Duke and UCLA have two commits on the roster each. Six of the players set to take part are undecided on where they’ll play ball at the next level.
On the women’s side, four players from Tennessee’s recruiting class will make it. All of Texas, Stanford, Louisville, Baylor, and UConn will have two All-Americans on the official roster.
